The San Diego Zoo became the result of an abandoned exotic animal exhibition back in 1915, and about a year later, Dr. Harry M. Wegeforth founded the Zoological Society of San Diego. The SD Zoo gained it’s popularity for  the “cagefree” exhibits.

It now sits on a hundred acres in the notable Balboa Park and houses over thirty-five-hundred different animals of a vast amount of different species and subspecies. People from all over the world visit the widely known world famous San Diego Zoo every single day.

Why should you visit the San Diego Zoo?

Let’s talk prices. They offer multiple options and I will narrow them down to what I think are the best deals, especially if you are visiting from out of town.

  1. 1-Day Pass; adults (12+) $56, children (3-11) $46; includes: admission, guided bus tour, kangaroo express bus, skyfari aerial tram and all regularly scheduled shows.
  2. 2-Visit Pass; adults (12+) $89.60, children (3-11) $79.60; includes: 1 day admission to San diego Zoo and 1 day admission to San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

I recommend out of towners to choose any of the above two ticket prices, but if you are looking to visit both parks, the 2-Visit Pass is a better deal. Keep in mind that the San Diego Zoo is located in central San Diego’s Balboa Park, while the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is located in North San Diego County’s Escondido.

For Military families, you can find deals on both parks by visiting a local ticket office on base. Click here for a list of current prices.

Our annual passes.

There is so much to explore at the San Diego Zoo. The newest exhibit is Africa Rocks and they are currently remodeling the children’s zoo. I personally cannot wait for it to reopen and will definitely share our experience once it opens. It is located in the San Diego Zoo.

They also have single and double strollers available for a reasonable price and is perfect if you do not want to lug your own around or do not have one with you on your trip. Visit their desk located near the entrance once inside the zoo. You are also allowed to bring inside your own packed lunches, but if you are unsure of what is allowed click here to find out more.

We currently have the annual pass for two adults in the same household and Adam is free until he turns three. We go at least once a month, sometimes more. From our experience, the best times to visit the zoo is during cooler days as the animals are more active.

I noticed the website no longer mentions being able to feed the giraffes, which we were able to do last June 2018. That was a memorable experience. I believe it was only available on the weekend during the afternoon for a couple hours and was $15 for three biscuits. If this is still available, I totally recommend it. To my shocking belief, Adam was not even scared.

Other than that, our favorite animals to see are the giraffes, elephants, gorillas, tortoises and hippos. But there are so many more amazing animals and exhibits to see throughout the San Diego Zoo.
